In August 2023, the Supreme State Audit came out with an audit for the period 2020-2022 for the treatment of tumor diseases at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center, highlighting a long list of problems.
"Worrying is the fact that both QSUNT Oncology Hospital and Regional Hospitals maintain "historical" budgets that do not change over the years. Referring to the data provided by the Oncology Hospital at QSUT, the number of patients in the country from year to year, is increasing, a fact that shows the aggressiveness of tumoral diseases", says the KLSH report for the Oncology department.
In this report, it is evident that the number of patients who are examined with these diseases is increasing. These diseases cause about 16% of deaths every year and the budget for their treatment occupies a small part in the budget of QSUT.
The show "Vetting" brought the voices of the citizens who were waiting at the doors of the Oncology department, who confirmed that they had been waiting for four days because the equipment was not working.
Although the High State Control has discovered some problems for the oncology service, related to the malfunction of some basic equipment, the situation has not changed. These devices are used to treat tumor diseases, leaving hundreds of patients without this vital service.
"It is established that the number of cases treated by the radiotherapy service is based on 4 main devices, of which Brachytherapy is not functional throughout the entire audit period, while Orthovoltage has not been functional since 02.11.2022" , says the report of KLSH- of.
According to KLSH auditors, the lack of Brachytherapy has led to the non-treatment of 200 patients per year. So, for three consecutive years, 600 female patients have not received this radiotherapy service, constituting a risk factor for their health.

The other medical device that is not functional as of November 2022, according to the auditors, is Orthovoltage. Due to a defect, patients suffering from skin tumors and sweat gland tumors were not treated. The lack of the Orthovoltage device has led to the non-treatment of 200 patients. They have not received this service with radiotherapy, posing a risk to their health.
On a continuous basis, the concern has become evident at the QSUT Directorate, that the Orthovoltage device has been amortized since 2020. This is because the Orthovoltage device was installed in 2002.
After several requests, the directorate of QSUT has sent a new device donated by the International Atomic Energy Agency in January of this year, but the report estimates that the device has not been installed yet and is hindered by the institution's bureaucratic procedures.
The High State Control has also found that other important equipment in the treatment of tumor diseases is missing, such as the tubes of the electric syringe device, pumps, and individual thermoplastic masks.
"Under these conditions, I judge him as a doctor, as a public health specialist and as a person who has followed very closely and follows very closely what is happening in the Albanian health system and the stage where Albanian health is today is not compatible with the lack of basic chemopreparations" , says the public health expert, Erion Dasho.
"Vetting" did some research on the number of patients who have received treatment at QSUT, but discovered inconsistencies between the figures quoted by the hospital itself and those stated by the State High Control.

According to QSUT, in 2020 2185 cyclic patients were treated, in 2021 2287 patients were treated and 2481 in 2022. So, we have an increase in these patients, but a lack of chemopreparations and a decrease in funds for Oncology from QSUT.
Meanwhile, the Supreme State Audit Office has discovered figures that do not correspond with the data of QSUT. Specifically, in 2020, 1,202 patients were treated, in 2021, 1,314 were treated, and in 2022, 1,361 patients were treated. The figures declared by QSUT are almost twice as high as those checked by the HCSC./ Vetting
