The fire at the Elbasan waste landfill is still ongoing, as firefighters are doing their best to extinguish the flames.
In an effort to isolate the source of the fire, firefighters from Tirana have also gone to Elbasan, as the intensity of the flames is high and extinguishing them is difficult.
The General Director of Fire Protection and Rescue, Arben Cara, has explained the arrival of aid from municipalities around Elbasan. Due to the debris, foam is being used to extinguish the fire, but the flames are still burning at high intensity.
" For the current fire that we are in, we have also engaged 60 firefighting forces from several neighboring municipalities. We have also taken two vehicles from the Tirana region, we have taken two from Kamza, we have taken firefighting vehicles from Berat and all the neighboring municipalities that the Elbasan region has. Intensive work is being done to isolate the fire source. Of course, we are dealing with waste that is very difficult to extinguish, since a special specificity is required, such as foam in this case. Foam is being used from all vehicles. We are bringing foam from Tirana and from several other cities, in order to isolate the fire in the shortest possible time. Also, the municipality itself has put several moving trucks, trucks, as you can see, to isolate the waste with the waste of the Shkumbini River, because if we do not use foam on this waste, the fire will continue intensively. The fire is very widespread. We have managed to isolate it so that it does not spread, so that the houses around it do not " are at risk ," said Cara.
Not only firefighters, but also the army is engaged in the situation in Elbasan. Cara explains that extinguishing the fire is also difficult due to the terrain.
"Beyond the forces engaged, the army is also engaged, with two or three of its own vehicles, to keep it under control. But, even though this fire is extinguished, it is reactivated in a few seconds, as the infrastructure itself does not allow us to have non-stop vehicles with water and foam. They have to go, refill, and return," he said.
Asked about the reasons for the fire, he said it was still too early to determine. Meanwhile, he said that the deliberate arsonists should suffer the punishment they deserve.
" The reasons... are still very early. We haven't even started yet."
"The law is very harsh. The Criminal Code is very harsh, I think it needs to be implemented more rigorously. State authorities must do their utmost to bring these perpetrators to justice and to suffer the punishment they deserve for the harm they cause to the population ," he said.
