The security alert issued by the US for Albania is increasingly being reflected in international media, where the country is described as at increased risk due to criminality and possible geopolitical threats, mainly related to the presence of the Iranian opposition and tensions with Tehran...

Following the American media, the German media have also paid attention to security in Albania. “ Stuttgarter Zeitung ” has dedicated an article to the alert issued by the US embassy, analyzing the dangers that threaten foreigners in our country.

According to the article, the US State Department maintains Albania at “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution,” a category associated with risks primarily related to crime. This assessment, last updated on December 31, 2024, has not changed since then.

Meanwhile, on April 1, 2026, the US Embassy in Tirana issued a “Security Alert,” warning of potential threats from groups linked to Iran. According to the notice, potential targets could include US-linked entities, Iranian opposition elements in Albania, as well as popular locations such as shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.

However, it is noted that a “Security Alert” does not constitute a change in the general level of travel advisory, but relates to specific circumstances and developments. In parallel, this warning is in line with a global alert issued by the State Department on March 22, 2026, which urges US citizens to exercise increased caution worldwide, especially near US and Israeli facilities.

One of the main factors influencing this situation is the presence in Albania of the Iranian opposition group “People’s Mujahedin” (MEK). Since 2013, several thousand members of this group have settled in the country, while their camp, Ashraf 3, is located near Durrës. According to the article, this presence is considered a sensitive point in relations with Iran.

Tensions between the two countries rose sharply in 2022, when Iran carried out a cyberattack on Albanian state infrastructure, leading to Tirana severing diplomatic relations. Since then, Albanian authorities have claimed to have thwarted several attempted attacks on the MEK camp by suspected Iranian agents.

German media points out that, although reports from various international media outlets, such as Fox News or Yahoo, have treated these developments in more sensationalist tones, the official facts do not constitute a general travel ban to Albania.

According to current recommendations, travel to Albania remains possible, but requires increased vigilance, especially in tourist areas and near facilities associated with the US or the Iranian opposition. Travelers are also advised to constantly follow security updates.

In conclusion, the article highlights that, although Albania is not at maximum alert level, the combination of criminality and potential geopolitical risks places the country in a category that requires increased caution from visitors. / Pamphlet
