Protest for the TID project in Durrës, elderly woman: I won't leave my house, let them demolish it!

The expropriation process of 74 families in Durrës, within the framework of the implementation of the project for the historical boulevard “Epidamn” (known as the TID project), has prompted continuous reactions and protests in front of the Municipality of Durrës. Residents say that they are not against the development of the historical area, but they object to the monetary value foreseen for the compensation and the way they are treated.

One of the most talked about cases is that of the elderly Sofie Simaku, who during the protest held the day before in front of the municipality declared that she will not leave her apartment, even if the building collapses. According to her, a notice has arrived at the door of the house to vacate the apartment by February 16.

The elderly woman is asking the state to provide her with an apartment within the city of Durrës, refusing to relocate to the Spitalla area or other areas. She says that she has been living in that apartment for about 70 years, which she says she bought herself.

"I have been living in that house for 70 years. I bought it myself, it was not given to me by the state. We lived in poverty. I was impressed how no official came to say 'they will destroy it', but they wrote it themselves, stamped it themselves. They even brought the postmen to bring the letters, but we did not receive them. The letter that we were going to leave the house on February 16. Is this the government? The house is mine, it should come and ask me how much I give it to them. Or give me an apartment in Durrës because I do not go to the hospital. I have decided that I will stay inside the house, let them demolish it and let the whole world know what kind of government we have. I will stay inside, I am dead because I am dead. We have only suffered all our lives, like the first and the last, everyone is the same",  said Sofie Simaku.

In addition to her, other residents affected by the project have also come out in protest, opposing the rental bonus offered by the municipality as a temporary solution. They emphasize that they are not against urban development of the area, but are demanding guarantees of safe and permanent housing, expressing concern that their homes are being taken away without providing them with a sustainable alternative.
