The government strengthens security for the head of SPAK...
The mafia-style execution of Durrës Appeals Court judge, Astrit Kalaja, has shaken the foundations of the judicial system and forced the government to urgently review security measures for justice officials who face serious criminal cases every day.
Just a few days after the assassination attempt that occurred inside the courtroom, the Council of Ministers has approved a new decision, which extends and strengthens protective measures for the leaders of key institutions of the new justice system.
According to the published decision, the heads of the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) and the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH) will be accompanied by armed bodyguards of various levels not only during the exercise of their mandate, but also for an additional period after its end, up to 3 years for the head of SPAK and 2 years for GJKKO and BKH.
But what is striking is the fact that the one who benefits is Altin Dumani. If we look at the old and new decision, the head of the GJKKO and the head of the BKH have the same two-year protection after leaving office. Meanwhile, for Dumani, it has increased from 2 to 3 years. It should be noted that in October Altin Dumani left this position.
This decision comes at a time when the judiciary itself has raised its voice about the lack of protection in the courts and the lack of minimal security infrastructure. The Kalaja case was described as “a pure mafia execution within the state” by his colleagues and civil society organizations. In many cases, judges and prosecutors of sensitive files have privately expressed that they feel unprotected and exposed to retaliation.
