An era is ending, another is beginning. The arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj marks another strong blow in the fight against corruption at the highest levels of Albanian politics. In this exclusive interview for the newspaper “SOT”, the renowned lawyer and analyst Romeo Kara analyzes the behind-the-scenes of this movement, its implications and the risk of a direct confrontation of SPAK with the old political elite. -Mr. Kara, how do you view the arrest of Erion Veliaj? Was it expected or surprising for you?
Looking at the dynamics of events in all their complexity, the already firmly established stereotype of governments of all types as plunderers of public assets, the affairs of a large group of Tirana Municipality leaders, who have been under arrest for almost a year, etc., have long prepared public opinion, not only for this arrest, but for all government officials and former government officials.
-Do you think there will be more "VIP" attacks before the elections? Will SPAK go higher than Erion Veliaj?
I have full confidence that SPAK, after months and years of investigations into a series of known and unknown affairs, has now entered the final phase of directly confronting corrupt high politics and precisely the elite of this politics of all sides. SPAK has long surpassed Veliaj's level, as it is an undeniable fact that Berisha and Meta are two of the tips of the iceberg of Albanian corruption. There are two former presidents and former prime ministers as well, where one is in prison and the other is under indictment with an obligation to appear. Yes, SPAK will go step by step to every challenge for which it was created. Very soon we will have other rulers and former rulers summoned by it and of course other arrests, and this is known and felt even by the political tyrants themselves, who are entering this election campaign as if they are in trouble and not with the enthusiasm of the past.
-How do you comment on the latest report published by the State Department, which takes Sali Berisha and his son-in-law as an example for money laundering?
It is undoubtedly a consistent American stance, which reconfirms its incompatibility with corruption, its inspirers and the justification games with Soros and LGBT, devised by the diabolical Berisha fantasy. No kind of Berisha alibi can hide Berisha's towers, endless properties and filthiness with public assets, his abuse of power, his inspiration of corruption and the taking of institutions hostage. Berisha has deservedly earned the status of the pivot of Albanian crime and corruption.
-Why is Berisha attacking SPAK and threatening to dissolve the new justice system? Is there any information that there will be a new indictment for January 21?
Berisha knows that the countdown has long begun against him and his end is very close. The only alternative he has left is the total destabilization of the state structure, the collapse of institutions, especially those of justice. He has been doing this since 1992 and especially openly since the moment of his declaration of "non grata" on May 19, 2021. Berisha is the enemy and the greatest public danger today, he is the main challenge of SPAK, the entire justice system and all Albanians who aspire to a legal state, a state of law and equal opportunities, where the sovereign will be the people and only the people. The affairs that will be revealed by justice against him will be countless and all in logical line with each other, therefore he knows well that he has lost the legal confrontation, so he dreams of avoiding this confrontation through blackmail and destabilization.
-Do you think that the investigations into the Gërdec file will reach Shkëlzen Berisha?
Certainly yes. It is not for nothing that he has been "honored" just like his father with the "high" title of Non Grata by the State Department. The sins will definitely be washed away, both in this world and in the next.
Corruption and greed for profits by the Non Grata Family took 28 innocent lives, including children, and destroyed hundreds of homes. It is not for nothing that that explosion has been called the Hiroshima of corruption. That case should now be tried for corruption and with the father and son, who sacrificed their own baxhanak there, as defendants. For me personally, the entire Berisha government should be the subject of an investigation by SPAK.
-What about Meta's accusations from prison, that he is being threatened with his life, and his statements that he will run in the elections, how do you comment on them?
We saw what kind of threat it was, just a routine check within every rule in his cell. No one needs his life, not even him, so it would be better to keep him under the 41 bis regime, so that he would not have the opportunity to harm himself. Don't take Liken too seriously, especially now that his associates and family have abandoned him as well. Liken lives only with jokes, delirium and especially with Fahri's tales. However, I expect him to keep his promise to become president again at the age of 80.
-Why haven't there been any complete seizures of assets so far, or is justice still in the process of investigating and collecting evidence?
This would be the final and most serious step of the new justice, although the facts and evidence that would lead to their confiscation by the courts must be well secured. Seizures without evidence have a significant cost, if the court decides to remove them. However, we must vet all family members of corrupt politicians up to the fourth degree, as the law and the Bible foresee. / Today
