Albania wants to host the NATO High Level Meeting in 2027. This was announced on Monday by Prime Minister Edi Rama when he published a letter of thanks sent to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, after his visit to Tirana on February 15.
Meanwhile, the official request was sent a few weeks ago.
"I believe it is time for a high-level meeting of NATO to be held for the first time in the Western Balkans", writes Mr. Rama in his letter, while noting that he has discussed this issue during the talks as well that he had with Secretary Blinken during his visit to the Albanian capital.
"Following our discussion in Tirana, I would like to reiterate Albania's intention to host the NATO High Level Meeting in 2027, immediately after the one to be held in 2026, which Turkey has offered generously host him".
In his letter, Mr. Rama emphasizes that Albania "has always demonstrated its steadfast commitment to the unity and values of the Alliance" and that "by offering to host the NATO Summit, it underlines its role as a beacon of values and the purpose of the Alliance, in this part of Europe". According to the Albanian Prime Minister, "such an event would have a historical and strategic significance for both the Region and the Alliance. It would convey the strong message that the region is of strategic importance for the Alliance".
Next week, NATO will inaugurate its air base in Kuçovo, thanks to an investment of 50 million euros by the Alliance and another 5 million spent by the Albanian Government.
According to the commander of the Albanian Air Force, Brigadier General Ferdinand Dimo, "NATO troops and NATO aircraft can be accommodated, trained and flown from the Kuçova air base, which is already a tactical air base of NATO". /VOA
