The number of drug users in Albania has reached 80,000, at least that is the official figure, but experts say the figure is higher. The decreasing age of users and the abuse of synthetic drugs are worrying.
On World Drug Day, the head of the toxicology service, Dr. Andrin Tahiri, says that drug abuse increases during the summer.
"Now in the summer it becomes even more dangerous to combine drugs with alcohol. I have the impression that they use it to escape from reality - an economic problem, a family problem, a stress that takes them away from reality," he told TCh.
In the toxicology service at the University Hospital, weekends have the largest influx of people who have used substances and seek medical help, as problems range from rhythm disorders to cardiac arrests.
In Albania, help is offered to drug users, but the treatment chain breaks in the middle, as there is no rehabilitation center for them.
"We don't have a state rehabilitation center ," says Dr. Andrin Tahiri.
On International Day Against Drug Abuse, the chief of the toxicology service has a message: “Drugs are not courage, they are not freedom – they steal your life, they destroy your family.”
