The fire in Darëzezë, Fier, has been reactivated, creating an alarming situation for local authorities and firefighting forces. After the flames that broke out yesterday were extinguished in the morning, the fires have been reactivated with even greater intensity during today's afternoon, covering so far about 10 hectares of forest area.
The Ministry of Defense announced that there are 7 firefighting vehicles on the ground with about 40 MZSH personnel, a bulldozer, a excavator and a chain tractor made available by the Fier Municipality to open intervention corridors. However, due to the sandy terrain and the large extent of the fire spread, intervention with conventional means has become almost impossible.
In an effort to contain the flames, a Cougar helicopter of the Albanian Air Force has also been activated, intervening from the air in coordination with the Joint Operational Center (JOC). The ministry announced that the air intervention became necessary after around 2:00 p.m. the fire reached such proportions that it prevented any ground efforts to extinguish it.
" At around 14:00, the fire spread further and it became impossible to intervene with firefighting vehicles. In coordination with the Joint Operations Center (JOC), the Air Force Cougar helicopter was launched in support for air intervention ," the announcement said.
The winds blowing in the northern direction are favoring the spread of the fire to new areas of the forest, risking its expansion beyond its current borders. Firefighters from Fier, Patos, Roskovec, forest service employees and residents of the area are involved in the action, who are trying to cope with the flames with emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile, another fire has been registered in the Zhupan hills, where firefighters' intervention has also been limited due to the difficult terrain. Sources from the Fier Prefecture indicate that additional aerial assistance has been requested in this area as well, to avoid further spread.
The situation in and around Darëzezë remains critical and evolving, while authorities say they are doing everything possible to bring the flames under control. In the meantime, the possibility that human factors, intentional or careless, are the cause of the fire cannot be ruled out, a phenomenon that is becoming a recurring plague during the summer season in Albania.
