Seismologist Dushi: Earthquakes are a continuation of the June 24 tremor,

Two consecutive earthquakes of moderate strength hit our country this Friday morning (June 27).

According to IGJEUM seismological data, the first earthquake struck at 08:59. The tremor had a magnitude of 3.9 with an epicenter in Fushë-Krujë, at a depth of 19.3 kilometers. While the second, a few minutes later, at exactly 09:04, had a magnitude of 3.8, with an epicenter in Zall Herr, Tirana, at a depth of 15 km.

Seismologist Edmond Dushi, in an interview with Tvklan, said that today's earthquakes are a continuation of the seismic activity of 3 days ago (June 24), when a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded.

According to him, this seismic activity should last up to 1 month with other aftershocks.

Question: Are today's tremors a continuation of the earthquake three days ago?

Seismologist Edmond Dushi: Yes, it is a continuation of the series that occurred a few days ago. Normally, that series should have continued for a longer time, at least 20 days or 1 month, but it stopped after 48 hours and this is expected to lead to a reactivation or an increase in the magnitude of the tectonic convulsion that has been created there.

Seismologist Edmond Dushi says that the aftershocks that are expected to follow will be around magnitude 4, based on the information that IGJEUM has available.

Dushi emphasizes that since Tuesday's main shock, about 100 earthquakes have been recorded so far, most of which are negligible.

Question: Is a stronger seismic shock expected or will seismic activity gradually calm down until the full release of energy?

Seismologist Edmond Dushi: Statistically, magnitudes of this level are expected, they may reach levels of order 4, but this is statistical and this depends a lot on the information we have, that is, on the network that is nearby, which is satisfactory but does not promise great accuracy. Some of the aftershocks are micro, very elementary and are indecipherable due to the area, which is a highly urbanized area and the stations are located in this area, and consequently they are also affected by the level of urban noise that exists. However, I think that this is the trend of magnitudes based on the data that we have, which is not small, there are about 100 earthquakes recorded so far.

Seismologist Edmond Dushi calls on citizens to remain calm.

Seismologist Edmond Dushi: The message for citizens is that they should not panic unnecessarily, but they should always be attentive to receive information and listen to the media in case the media provides information, as is the case in question, or to the officials who deal with civil emergencies who are responsible for issuing this guidance information. In the meantime, what I say as a specialist is that we should remain calm and coexist with this phenomenon.
