After the tragic accident in Durrës, the director of the State Police calls for tougher punitive measures and an increase in administrative fines for traffic violations.
The Director of the State Police, Skënder Hita, reacted after the tragic accident in Durrës, describing the event as a great shock for public opinion and for him personally, while warning of possible changes to the Criminal Code and the Highway Code.
Hita said the accident has highlighted the need for tougher treatment of road violations and increased safety standards.
" It is a very serious event that has shocked the entire public opinion, but also me personally. The suspension of the police officers is related to the verification that the Directorate of Professional Standards is carrying out to see step by step the entire procedure, the way in which the police officers acted in that area and to make it possible to guarantee road safety in the community. We still do not have a conclusion on the results of the investigation of the Directorate of Standards, while the administrative investigation continues, but in parallel the criminal investigation is also continuing ", declared the Director of the State Police.
The Police Chief emphasized that the event has brought to the fore the need for legal intervention, both administratively and criminally, to prevent fatal accidents.
" Changes to the Highway Code or the Criminal Code definitely take time, but I believe the time has come and it is more than normal to have such interventions. The latest case shows best that road murders are events as serious as any other criminal event. In this context, in addition to the measures that need to be taken, we should also look at the increase in administrative measures, since even incorrect parking, which often becomes a source of accidents or fatal events, is today punished with very low measures ," said Hita.
He warned that the State Police will undertake concrete initiatives for legal changes with a focus on road safety.
" So, in this context, we will take our initiative to propose changes to the relevant provisions of the Criminal Code and the Road Code, in order to have as much road safety as possible for all citizens and road users ," said Hita.
