The recent raids by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) against two suspected criminal groups with significant investments in the construction sector have brought back into focus the debate on the impact of illicit capital on the Albanian economy.
Invited to "MCN Economy", journalist Ferdinand Dervishi stated that recent developments confirm suspicions raised for years about the use of the construction sector for investing capital that is suspected of originating from criminal activities.
" We have two important strikes that, in my opinion, confirm what has long been said, that in Albania a portion of the money generated by criminal activities has been invested in the construction sector. We are talking about very large sums that have entered the economy and have been channeled into important projects and have been allowed by the state itself. So we are talking about billions that are allowed by the Albanian state to enter Albania.
Those who thought that all the dirty money of Albanians, and the state itself, allowed this, that money to be brought in, and here we have the situation.
The influence of these capitals has distorted the market and created developments that do not conform to the logic of a formal economy. How is it possible for the lek to strengthen against the euro and the dollar in an economy with structural problems?
"These are phenomena that require in-depth analysis. In a fully formal economy it would be difficult to explain such developments ," he said.
Dervishi assessed that SPAK's investigations and seizures could mark a turning point in the fight against money laundering.
" With these investigations and seizures by SPAK, it can be said that the 'great cliff' was broken, while the top of the pyramid for Artur Shehu and his friends was broken, I believe that it will continue. I believe that with these blows an important barrier has been broken. If the investigations continue with the same intensity, we may have other significant developments in the future. There are several prosecutors there who are either incompetent or are connected to the SP, I only know Altin Dumani, who has done something in this direction ," he said.
