The poisoning of 56 students at the Sauk Security Academy has shocked public opinion and raised strong questions about food safety in state institutions. Two people have been arrested and the administrator of the catering company “Sori-Al” has been declared wanted, while investigations are focusing on the food distributed to students. The company is the winner of 75 public tenders with a total value of around 4.2 billion lek.

At the same time, the Director of the State Police, Skënder Hita, presented a new model of communication with the media and citizens, promising more professional transparency and more accurate information on criminal events and police operations.

Strong debates also took place in the Assembly, where the opposition requested an interpellation with Edi Rama on issues related to European integration and the oil sector, while the Prime Minister's absence from the hall brought new political clashes. In parallel, Rama spoke at the World Congress of Law on justice reforms, at a time when the opposition continues to accuse him of political propaganda.

On the justice front, SPAK sent former officer Igli Haxhiaj to trial, accused of corruption, abuse of office and leaking investigative secrets in the file of the Visit i Poja criminal group. Meanwhile, the trial against Erion Veliaj and other co-defendants is expected to begin on May 26, with requests for the hearing to be public.

According to Eurostat data, Albania ranks among the countries with the highest number of prisoners in Europe in relation to the population, which has revived the debate on the penitentiary system and penal policies in the country.

In Kosovo, the June 7 snap elections are approaching amid political tensions and growing rivalry between Albin Kurti and Vjosa Osmani. Osmani's rapprochement with the LDK is seen as a development that could change the political balance in the country.

From the region, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that he has information from Tirana according to which the military alliance between Kosovo, Albania and Croatia was initiated by Zagreb, increasing political tensions in the Balkans.

In the international arena, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Rome for meetings with the Pope and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, at a time of tensions between the US administration and the Holy See.

Meanwhile, the conflict between the US and Iran remains in the global spotlight. US President Donald Trump said Tehran "desperately" wants a deal, but warned of a resumption of bombing if Iran rejects the US draft for a ceasefire and restrictions on its nuclear program.
