"Air Albania" between bankruptcy, lawsuits and debts: the alarming situation that the government is refusing to reveal!
In a recently published article, the German portal aeroTELEGRAPH sheds light on the deep crisis of the state-owned airline Air Albania, reporting on an alarming situation that includes massive flight cancellations, unpaid debts, contract terminations and international lawsuits.
According to aeroTELEGRAPH, although the aviation sector in Albania is experiencing a real boom, with companies like Wizz Air and Ryanair recording strong growth in passenger numbers and with Tirana airport expecting around 12 million passengers in 2025, Air Albania has lagged behind and risks exiting the market.
The crisis deepens after unsustainable expansion
The German newspaper notes that after an aggressive attempt to open new routes in the spring of 2025, to up to 12 destinations at once, Air Albania faced an operational collapse, canceling most flights shortly after takeoff. This maneuver was described by sources as "a very hasty expansion and without real logistical or financial support."
Problems with leased aircraft, broken contracts
AeroTELEGRAPH reports that the Ukrainian company Sky Up, which had signed a contract to provide Air Albania with two aircraft for two years, has canceled the agreement after only one month of operation. The reason? Non-compliance with contractual obligations and late payments. Worse still, Sky Up accuses Air Albania of having signed parallel contracts with other companies for the same flight scheme, leaving Sky Up's aircraft unused on the runway.
This has caused significant financial damage to the Ukrainian party, which has already initiated legal proceedings against Air Albania. According to aeroTELEGRAPH, the trial will be held in December 2025 and the lawsuit has been accepted by the court.
Another lawsuit from the US, for previous Airbus planes
The problems don't end there. The aeroTELEGRAPH article cites another lawsuit filed by the American company GA Telesis, which accuses Air Albania of violating the leasing agreement for two Airbus A320 aircraft. According to the lawsuit, the Albanian company stopped payments in March 2025 and failed to comply with other contractual obligations, including payments to Eurocontrol.
In this case, Turkish Airlines is also included in the lawsuit as a shareholder of Air Albania, making the situation even more legally complicated.
No owned aircraft, limited operations with leased aircraft
Currently, Air Albania does not own any of its own aircraft. The only flights are being operated by two leased aircraft, one from Fly2Sky and another from Dan Air, for a very limited network that includes Istanbul, Ankara, Bologna, Milan and Verona.
Meanwhile, sources from within the company speak of delays in employee payments, a lack of insurance, and a general state of collapse of operations.
AeroTELEGRAPH emphasizes that, despite official requests for comment, Air Albania has not responded to any allegations, lawsuits and the financial crisis it is going through. The silence only adds to the suspicions of an imminent bankruptcy and increases uncertainty about the future of the company that was once promoted as the new flag carrier of the Albanian sky. /Pamphlet
