China has strongly criticized the United States' decision to impose sanctions on members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) for failing to honor some of their commitments.
"China is shocked by the US decision to sanction Palestinian Authority officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization. We find it disappointing and difficult to understand that the US continues to turn a blind eye to international peace efforts," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The sanctions, announced in a statement on Thursday, will deny US visas to unnamed Palestinian officials. The move appears to be a further step to punish those investigating alleged crimes committed by Israel as the war in Gaza continues.
The move was announced while special envoy Steve Witkoff was visiting Israel and while diplomatic talks in Doha to reach a ceasefire have stalled.
According to the statement, the State Department told Congress that the PA and the PLO “are not in compliance with their commitments” under certain laws.
