Did Putin stage a coup? The Russian billionaire recounts the details of
Vladimir Putin and Yevgeny Prigozhin

The harrowing hours of the attempted coup that Russia and its ruling elite faced this weekend were accompanied by more unknown sides to the local and global public, catching them by surprise.

Former Russian MP Ilya Ponomarev says the Wagner group's armed uprising itself was a hoax. The well-known dissident who also voted against the annexation of Crimea in the Russian Parliament, states that the head of Wagner and Vladimir Putin had an agreement about what was going to happen and that no one else knew.

He explains to the media that Prigiozhin is a man of great faith. They have known each other for a long time and the circumstances in which they met created a great relationship of trust between them.

But why would Putin need to stage a coup in the unfavorable circumstances of holding power and international pressure?

The former deputy believes that the Russian President's goal was "to frighten the Russian and international elites. He had to send a message that it is not the worst option and that Prigozhin, who claimed power, no one in the international community would like to see with a nuclear button in his hand.

According to Ponomarev, Putin wanted to demonstrate with the failed coup that the possibility of replacing him was "real" and that the replacement was worse than him.

Prigozhin, says the Russian billionaire, for his part needed a way to leave Ukraine "with dignity".

"He's been fighting for a long time and he's tired. He has lost many of his men, but above all he has great financial opportunities in Africa, great military contracts that he can pursue, but he could not leave the front and he needed an excuse."

He declares that Belarus, where Prigozhin is expected to go, is just a transit point. He will not stay long there and from there he will go to Africa.

The former deputy of the Russian Duma emphasizes that in any case yesterday's events will have positive consequences for Kiev as the morale of the Russian troops has fallen while the problem with the chain of command of the army was confirmed. While analyzing that the Russians will support Putin after this event as they consider him the winner.
