The head of the UK's Royal Navy, Admiral Ben Key, has been removed from his post while under investigation for allegations of misconduct.
According to media reports, the Ministry of Defense did not provide further details on the matter for which he is being investigated.
But the Ministry's statement comes after a report in the Sun newspaper that Key was suspected of having an affair with a female subordinate of his.
Earlier this week, the Ministry issued a statement saying Key had "withdrawn for private reasons," according to a report in the Financial Times.
The FT quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Key's move was unrelated to the government's strategic defence review, which is expected to be published soon.
Key was expected to step down from his position this summer, having served as head of the Royal Navy since 2021. This means the search for his successor had already begun.
Last year, Key apologized unreservedly for "intolerable" misogyny in the Submarine Service, after a series of investigations across the navy revealed sexual harassment, bullying and assaults against women within its ranks, according to the Guardian.
