A police officer was seriously injured in a car accident while securing the motorcade of US Vice President JD Vance in Maryville, Tennessee, according to officials.
Maryville Police Officer Justin Brown and a state police officer were involved in the accident that occurred Friday evening "during a high-level officer protection mission involving multiple police forces," according to local officials.
The Maryville Police Department reported that civilians remained at the scene of the accident and "immediately provided first aid."
"To those whose immediate response saved Justin Brown's life last night, we will never be able to thank you enough. You are true heroes," Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said in a statement Saturday.
Brown was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery Saturday morning, according to Maryville police.
An ambulance participating in the motorcade also stopped and provided immediate medical care, according to Special Agent Jason Pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Safety.
Paramedics examined the state police officer involved in the collision and determined he did not need to be taken to the hospital, according to authorities.
A US Secret Service spokesman confirmed to ABC News that Vance was in the convoy.
"The U.S. Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic accident involving local law enforcement officers that occurred this afternoon in Maryville, Tennessee, while they were backing up a motorcade," Katherine Pierce, agent in charge of the Knoxville office, said in a separate statement.
He said "protected persons were not affected by the accident" and added: "Our thoughts are with the police officers, their families and their services."
