Putin's ambitions and Trump's goals for the new global order
Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump

The Tsar can fight for another two years. The EU lacks strength, the US has its own interests...

They call it a peace plan, but it's another unrealized dream.

The first was in August after the Anchorage summit. Then, European allies rushed to Washington to bring Donald Trump, seduced by Vladimir Putin's demands, back on track. They managed to convince the American president to accept the idea of renouncing the territories of Donbass still controlled by Kiev. And they added "security guarantees" capable of protecting Kiev from further attacks.

All right, all legitimate, but also contrary to Moscow's objectives. So Putin, having received assurances from financial analysts and military leaders that the war could continue for another two years, explained to Trump and the Europeans that such a peace was unattainable.

Today we are back to this issue. Corrections by Zelensky and the Europeans have transformed even the 28 points agreed upon by Washington and Moscow into a plan unacceptable to the latter. Unless it is imposed on them. But who has the strength? Certainly not a militarily and financially exhausted Ukraine with no men to send to the trenches. Not the European Union, which, if faced with the prospect of war over Ukraine, would reveal itself as an archipelago more divided than the Italian communes. Meanwhile, Trump, the only one who has the strength, has no intention of using it.

So, it is better to face reality. To end the war, Putin seeks an outcome that will leave him in history as the Tsar capable of imposing on NATO and the EU not only the occupation of Donbass (territorially insignificant for a Russia slightly larger than China and the United States combined), but also the restoration of the former sphere of influence and prestige of the USSR.

For this reason, he will not tolerate any Western soldiers on Ukrainian soil destined to become a symbol of regained power. For this reason, he will not even discuss control of the Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, already sanctioned in the Constitution as full Russian territories.

These are demands that Trump is prepared to accept in exchange for a new global order where Russian raw materials find their way to America rather than China.

But for now, he still wants to save face by using his hated European allies as fig leaves, knowing full well that peace plans or ceasefires unacceptable to Moscow will not save Ukraine.

They will only prolong its agony and the loss of human life on both sides of the front. Their only effect will be to make Europe's irreparable weakness and Trump's unstoppable will to power less ethically visible. / Adapted from Il Giornale /
