Pope Leo XIV has welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States, calling it a positive development and a "sign of hope" for peace.
In a speech delivered at the Vatican, he stressed the importance of stopping the fighting and the need to use this moment to advance towards diplomatic solutions.
The Pope stressed that only through negotiations can an end to the war be achieved, urging that the ceasefire period be used for intensive diplomatic efforts.
"Only through a return to negotiations can the war be ended... openness to dialogue can become the means to resolve other conflict situations around the world ," he said.
The head of the Catholic Church has been an outspoken critic of the escalation of the conflict. A day earlier, he described the threats against the Iranian people as unacceptable, reacting in a climate of high tensions between the parties.
The Pope's statements come at a time when rhetoric between the US and Iran has been harsh, including strong warnings from the American side. Against this backdrop, the ceasefire is seen as an opportunity to reduce tensions and open the way for dialogue.
