Former Prince Andrew's arrest; 12 hours of questioning and secret emails in
Former Prince Andrew

Former Prince Andrew was arrested and questioned for 12 hours on suspicion of sharing confidential information with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Thousands of pages of documents trace the relationship between Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, and Ghislaine Maxwell.

An email dated August 16, 2001, sent from Balmoral and signed simply “A,” is addressed to Maxwell with these words: “I’m here at Balmoral, the royal family’s summer camp… How’s Los Angeles going? Have you found me any new inappropriate friends? ” In the same communication he adds: “I really want to go somewhere warm with interesting people. Any ideas?”

The documents contain references to relationships with young women who were part of Epstein's circle and his sex trafficking network. However, at the heart of the current investigation is the disclosure of classified government information.

On November 30, 2010, when Epstein was found guilty of sexual abuse and solicitation of prostitution by a minor, Andrew forwarded him two reports on a business trip he had taken to China, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Singapore. The reports had been sent to him by an associate, Amit Patel. According to the documents, Andrew sent them to Epstein five minutes after receiving them.

At the time, he was serving as the British government's special envoy for international trade and investment. Queen Elizabeth II had insisted that her son take the post, while Prince Charles had expressed opposition. Then-Prime Minister Tony Blair accepted the Queen's request.

On December 24, 2010, Andrew sent Epstein another document, noting its nature in the email itself: "Enclosed is a confidential report prepared by the reconstruction team in Helmand province on investment opportunities." He added: " I will be offering these to others in my network (including Abu Dhabi), but I am interested in your impressions, views, or ideas of others with whom I can share them to generate interest."

The documents also include messages on his whereabouts, itineraries, meetings held, holiday greetings and the hope of "playing together again soon."

Andrew continued to serve as special envoy until 2011. The activities of this period form the core of the investigations that led to his arrest, motivated by suspicions of abuse of office.

Authorities have not ruled out possible links to Epstein's victims in the investigation. Police are investigating private flights that passed through Stansted Airport carrying young women from the financier's circle. The documents also mention the sending of a girl selected by Epstein and Maxwell for Andrew to London, to Buckingham Palace.

The files also confirm the authenticity of a photo showing Andrew with Virginia Roberts, later Giuffre, who was 17 at the time. Andrew has consistently denied having sex with her and, in a 2019 Newsnight interview, stated that he did not remember ever meeting her.

According to the analysis by "Corriere della Sera", the emails represent only a part of the investigative material, while the authorities' attention is focused on the nature of the information shared while he held an official position. / Corriere della Sera
