Five European intelligence chiefs doubt a deal between Russia and Ukraine is possible this year, according to Reuters news agency. This despite Donald Trump's insistence that US-brokered talks have brought a deal "quite close".
The leaders spoke on condition of anonymity and said Russia does not want to end the war quickly, while four of them said Moscow is taking advantage of the talks to push for sanctions relief and business deals.
One chief even said the talks are “negotiation theater.” Reuters suggested the comments show a deep divide between Europe and the US.
Volodymyr Zelensky said the White House wants to reach a peace deal by June, ahead of the US midterm elections in November, while Trump believes Vladimir Putin wants to reach a deal.
"Russia is not looking for a peace agreement. They are looking for their strategic goals and they have not changed ," said one of the European intelligence chiefs.
Another chief said Russia neither wants nor needs a quick peace deal, as its economy "is not on the verge of collapse."
