European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as deeply concerning.
Ursula von der Leyen said that it is essential that Turkey is dedicated to the will to carry out European practices.
" We see the mayor's detention as deeply concerning news, given that Turkey is a member of the Council of Europe and a candidate country for membership in the European Union."
It is essential that Turkey upholds democratic values, especially the rights of elected officials.
"We want Turkey to remain connected to Europe, but this requires a clear commitment to democratic norms and practices, and it is essential that Turkey respects these fundamental principles ," Von der Leyen told reporters.
European Council President Antonio Costa simply stated that he agreed with Ursula von der Leyen's words on this issue.
