The criminal gang that entered the premises of a television studio in Ecuador wanted its actions to be broadcast live. Journalists held hostage by gunmen tell the media how the aggressors managed to take control of the TV channel.
"At 14:10 we heard a fight outside the studio. In the headset, the producer told us that we should be careful because some people are entering the interior of the channel, and they are attacking us.
Immediately after the warning, the gunmen tried to break down the doors of the studio, which are almost armored, to say what they wanted. They wanted us to be live in it."
Although fortunately there were no casualties, journalists said that not everyone escaped unharmed," said Jose Luis Calderon, moderator.
"When they finally came in, they asked us to go on the air, they insulted us. However, I can say that we were placed in a safe place. But one of the cameramen was shot, another had his arm broken. They shot with guns", he emphasized.
The police have arrested 13 armed people who "invaded" the television studio.
Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa declared an "internal armed conflict" in the country, ordering security forces to "neutralize" criminal groups accused of spreading extreme violence in the Latin American nation.
More than 130 prison staff are being held hostage by inmates in five prisons. The streets have been mostly empty since Tuesday. Hundreds of soldiers, including tanks, are patrolling the streets and the capital.
