EU saves Radio Free Europe from closure; 5.5 million euros to keep the voice of

The European Union has decided to provide 5.5 million euros in emergency funding to support Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), following the suspension of funding by the Trump administration, which accused the media of liberal bias.

This EU intervention aims to preserve broadcasting in neighboring countries of the bloc, where citizens depend on external sources for independent information.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas declared that this support is a "safety net" for independent journalism, emphasizing the importance of RFE/RL as a "beacon of democracy" in regions where media freedom is limited.

She expressed the hope that EU member states would contribute further to ensuring the long-term sustainability of this broadcaster.

Radio Free Europe, headquartered in Washington and with a journalistic center in Prague, broadcasts in 27 languages in 23 countries, including regions such as Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.

After the US cut off funding, a federal court ordered the return of $12 million allocated by Congress, but the organization continues to face financial challenges.

This EU action underlines its commitment to supporting media freedom and opposing efforts to silence critical voices in regions where democracy is fragile.
