Former US President Joe Biden has lashed out at his successor, saying President Donald Trump has "dealt a devastating blow" to democracy.
"I knew Trump would have a destructive approach to the country, but I have to admit I didn't know it would be this bad," he said .
"Trump has dealt a devastating blow not only to the people's home, but also to the Constitution, the rule of law, our democracy itself," Biden said at a gala organized in Omaha by the Nebraska Democratic Party.
Biden also mocked Trump's repeated statements that his second term had brought "a golden age" to the country.
At several points during the comments, Biden addressed Trump directly.
On one occasion, the former president said: “Frankly, you are acting in a way that shames us as a nation.”
The former president also discussed his prostate cancer diagnosis. Biden linked his personal experience to the importance of health care.
" I thank God for the doctors and nurses and the incredible advances we are making in cancer research. Now Trump and his Republican friends are cutting government funding for health care and making it more expensive, more expensive for almost everyone ," Biden said.
