The number of victims from the floods in Libya has reached 20 thousand.
Rescue teams in the coastal town of Derna are searching the streets, collapsed buildings and even the sea for dead bodies. The waters that overflowed from the collapse of two dams, due to a storm, are suspected to have killed between 18 and 20 thousand people.
Residents who survived are suffering the consequences of the disaster. They have called for international help. According to them, dead bodies are everywhere.
"The whole city is leveled. Victims are still under the rubble and even in the sea. There are bodies buried in mass graves as the cemeteries are overcrowded. Shouldn't I again ask the neighbors and the Europeans to come and help us? You can see the situation yourself", declared a man from the flooded areas.
Jordan has sent a military commercial plane loaded with aid. It is one of the many governments that have provided assistance. France and Italy are leading the European effort, while Turkey is sending equipment.
The storms also hit other areas in eastern Libya, such as the cities of Bayda and Susa, where a medical center was flooded and several hundred families were displaced. The United Nations has pledged $10 million to traumatized survivors.
The floods in Libya have caused billions of dollars in damage.
