The unusual case has fueled speculation as to who and why opened a tunnel into the courtroom where important files are kept and where almost ten tonnes of drugs used as evidence in the past two years alone have been stored.
When officials of the Montenegrin Supreme Court came to work on Monday, they discovered a hole in the wall of the warehouse where the evidence is kept. They immediately called the police, who discovered that the hole was actually the opening of a tunnel leading to a nearby apartment.
According to Montenegrin media, a rather large tunnel, the digging of which must have taken more than a month, leads from the court to an apartment in the basement of the building on the other side of Njegoševa Street in the Montenegrin capital.
That apartment, its owners said, was rented at the end of July, and the opening of the tunnel was most likely carried out in August, while most employees in the state administration, including the Supreme Court, were on vacation.
The people who rented the apartment, the Montenegrin media write, used false documents. The owner of the apartment who rented the apartment to them was interrogated by the police of Podgorica and said that she did not know the tenants before.
The most important protected buildings are located near the apartment and the building of the Supreme Court: the Parliament, the Government, the Constitutional Court, the Central Bank.
Currently, investigators do not know the motive and purpose of the unknown persons who opened the tunnel for at least a month.
Robbery or preparation for escape?
During the preliminary investigations, it was discovered that some items inside the warehouse were scattered around. An investigation later revealed that, despite initial speculation, nothing had been stolen.
This was confirmed by the president of the Supreme Court, Boris Savič.
"We have established that the items in the warehouse have been moved from their previous location, but nothing is missing. The information that something was stolen is not true," said Savič.
But the employees did not feel or hear anything, which calls into question the security of the court: "Even if there were 100 policemen around the building, they would not be able to prevent what is happening under the building", Savič said.
The investigation would certainly have been easier if the tool used to dig the tunnel had been found, but the unknown "miners" took all the equipment with them after the job was done. However, some items were found in the tunnel from which, investigators hope, the perpetrator's DNA material can be extracted.
