
The death toll in the flood-ravaged city of Derna could reach 20,000, according to the mayor of the eastern Libyan city that was hardest hit by the devastating passage of storm Daniel, foreign media reported.
More than 5,300 people have died since Storm Daniel hit Derna and at least 10,000 people are missing. Meanwhile, local authorities and emergency services in eastern Libya appealed to the international community for help, warning that the country does not have the necessary infrastructure to deal with a disaster of this scale.
In the footage released the once densely populated city center, built along a dry riverbed, has now turned into a vast, flat expanse of muddy land. Tall buildings collapsed and entire families sleeping inside could not escape.
