"We will counterattack," German government declares war on left-wing
Alexander Dobrindt

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt is aiming to step up the fight against left-wing extremism. At a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday morning, the Christian Social Union politician explained that the government was dealing with the consequences of the attack on Berlin's electricity grid in early January. The government plans to increase the number of personnel in the security services.

"We are responding," the minister said.

Dobrindt emphasized that this would be achieved without cuts in other areas and that this did not represent an overall change of focus.

The capacities to combat Islamist terrorism and right-wing extremism would remain intact. Budgetary provisions had already been made for the necessary positions.

In connection with the Berlin attack, the German government is offering a reward of one million euros for information leading to an arrest. An investigative team at the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) is accepting relevant information 24 hours a day, including weekends.

As a result of the arson attack on a cable-stayed bridge, allegedly carried out by left-wing extremists, approximately 100,000 people, 45,000 families and 2,200 businesses were left without electricity and heating in sub-zero temperatures.
