President Donald Trump has declared that there is "no timeline" for conflict with Iran and rejected suggestions that political issues are influencing his approach.
He also said, in an interview with Fox News' Martha MacCallum, that there was no "time pressure" for the ceasefire he extended Tuesday afternoon or to hold new peace talks.
Asked when the war might end, Trump said there was "no timeline" and no rush. He had previously said the war would last four to six weeks, but it is now in its seventh week.
" People say I want to get it over with because of the midterm elections, that's not true," Trump said, adding that the administration wanted to reach a good deal for the American people.
Trump vowed to continue the US blockade of Iranian ports even as he extended the ceasefire and did not specify an end date, pressuring Tehran to present a unified proposal to revive negotiations.
CNN has reported that the administration has received practical silence from Iranian officials since Tuesday evening.
