Military analyst Michael Clarke believes that Donald Trump has put himself in a very difficult situation with his recent comments on Iran.
Clarke says there is a possibility that Trump will try to back down from his threats against Iran, including the statement that "an entire civilization will die tonight."
However, according to Clarke, past experience does not necessarily indicate that there will be a withdrawal. He recalls that Trump went ahead with the military operation in Venezuela in January, after building up a significant force presence.
"They tend to press the 'go' button and not the 'go home' button," he says.
Clarke highlights a second element that, in his opinion, could indicate that the dynamics of escalation have already begun. He refers to the increasing strikes in Iran, which, he says, have targeted railway bridges and Kharg Island.
"Why would the Americans do this? Unless the Israelis are trying to persuade the Americans to act sooner, which remains plausible," Clarke says.
According to him, the events of the last few hours indicate that a momentum may have been created that is pushing the situation towards a scenario with serious consequences.
"It seems that a momentum has begun a few hours ago that could lead the situation towards a series of quite catastrophic circumstances," he concludes.
