Former President Donald Trump has sued E. Jean Carroll for defamation after she accused him of raping her in the mid-1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room.
In a counterclaim filed Tuesday night, Trump claims Carroll defamed himself when she appeared on CNN the morning after the jury awarded her $5 million in damages.
Carroll was asked about the ruling that Trump sexually abused Carroll, but did not rape her as she claimed. But Carroll insisted during the show and said that he raped her.
Trump's counterclaim is the latest legal effort in a years-long battle between Trump and Carroll. Carroll first sued Trump for defamation in 2019 after he denied her claim that he raped her in the mid-1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room.
She sued him again last year under a New York law that allows a one-year statute of limitations for civil lawsuits for survivors of sexual assaults, regardless of when they happened. Meanwhile, Trump has started a new trial.
The 2019 defamation suit is scheduled to go to trial next year, although there are still some outstanding legal issues.
