The Greek police have arrested 5 people suspected of being the executioners of two of the most popular mobsters in the country, Janis Skafturos and Vasilis Rubetis.
Both were executed by rival groups. It is learned that apart from the 5 arrested, several other people who have fled the country have also been put under international search.
The operation continues and details of the operation as well as the names of the detainees are expected in the next few hours.
Police sources said that today's arrests are not related to the execution a few days ago of another exponent of the Greek mafia, Vangjelis Zabunis, who was executed with 97 bullets at a gas station owned by him.
Giannis Skaftouros, 55 years old, one of the biggest 'bosses' of night life in Greece was executed with a Kalashnikov rifle in April 2022. He was killed in the backyard of his house, when he was with 10 people of others.
The perpetrators approached the businessman's house with a motorcycle and stopped 150 meters from the building. Then they walked and the moment they got close to the door, they put their hoods on their heads, took out their Kalashnikov and fired at the businessman. The 55-year-old also took out his gun from his belt to respond to the perpetrators, but the Kalashnikov barrage did not leave him time and the 55-year-old fell directly to the ground, dead.
As a result of the shooting, his wife, only 22 years old, and his father-in-law, 45 years old, were injured. Both are in the hospital, out of danger.
55-year-old Giannis Skaftouros was one of the most famous people of the night world. He was known as the right-hand man of Vassilis Stefanakos, and was accused of taking part in the kidnapping of the ship owner Periklis Panagopoulos, murder for hire, explosions, etc. He had been released from prison for 3 and a half years. In the summer of 2018, while he was in Korydallos prison, he was attacked with a knife by members of the Albanian mafia. But this is not the only connection with the Albanians, as he was considered to be a participant in the helicopter escape of Alket Rizai and Vassilis Paleokostas from the prison of Korydallos, as it is suspected that he would provide shelter to the fugitives.
