Downing Street has confirmed that the crisis of dinghies illegally crossing the English Channel between England and France is worsening.
This statement was made after the meeting of British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Macron at the G7 summit in Canada, to find ways to curb illegal migration to Britain.
This is the first time the British Prime Minister's Office has categorically stated that the raft saga is getting worse. According to the British government, the two leaders have agreed to find innovative ways to combat rafts arriving on English shores.
The number of arrivals has reached a shocking level, with 16,000 illegal immigrants successfully making the perilous journey across the English Channel between France and England.
Boat crossings are currently 42 percent higher this year than last year. Although
Britain has paid France £480 million to pay French police and forces to prevent the dinghies from filling up and setting off on their journey to England. The French say they cannot intervene once the dinghies are at sea, even filling up with migrants, as it violates the laws of the sea and endangers the lives of the people on the dinghies.
The British seek to change this status quo, but this will also depend on the willingness of the French, whose only benefit from illegal crossings is to empty the country of illegal immigrants who are then left at the British doorstep, especially after Brexit.
