The United Arab Emirates has called for a reduction in tensions in the Middle East and the start of political negotiations between Iran and Israel, at a time when the region continues to face the consequences of the recent military conflict.
The statements were made by Anwar Gargash, a senior adviser to the Emirati president, shortly after Israel publicly admitted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had made a secret visit to Abu Dhabi during the war with Iran.
In a reaction on the social network X, Gargash stressed that the Emirates did not support the conflict and worked to avoid escalating the situation.
"We did not ask for this war and we honestly worked to avoid it," he wrote.
The Emirati official stressed that relations between Arab countries and Iran should not be based on constant clashes and tensions.
"Arab-Iranian relations in the Persian Gulf cannot be built on confrontations and conflicts in a region whose peoples are bound by deep geographical and historical ties," Gargash declared.
He added that the Emirates will defend their sovereignty, but continue to support the diplomatic path to resolving crises.
"Defending the UAE is a sacred duty and we will defend our sovereignty. The UAE's priority remains achieving political solutions," the official said.
In his statement, Gargash also mentioned international developments and their impact on the region.
"As the world follows the decisive visit of the US President to China and what it may signal in terms of regional influences, the UAE continues to affirm in this context the importance of a political solution through a path to negotiations, which it continues to respect in all its communications," he wrote.
Shortly before Gargash's response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office publicly acknowledged for the first time that the Israeli leader had made a secret visit to the United Arab Emirates during the war with Iran.
According to Netanyahu's office, during this visit he met with the president of the Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the talks brought "a historic breakthrough" in relations between the two countries.
However, Israeli authorities did not provide details on the timing of the trip or on the specific agreements reached during the meeting. So far, the United Arab Emirates has not officially reacted to the announcement made by Israel.
