Eva Kaili has decided to challenge the Belgian justice system. Through her lawyers, she claims that the country's police and secret services violated her parliamentary immunity.
The former vice-president of the European Parliament, who was arrested last December for participating in a corruption scandal involving non-EU countries, is not the only one to take legal action against the Belgian justice system.
Other legislators involved in the scandal, such as the Italian Andrea Kocolino and the Belgian Mark Tarabela, have also appealed the lawsuits against them.
If they win, then the whole thing could sink. In Brussels, the first session was held in the Palace of Justice.
"Our objections are based on two columns. One is that Eva Kaili's right to be immune from the Belgian secret services has been violated and this shows that the proceedings are without merit. The second and most important is that the investigator of the case, Michel Klez, had a basic obstacle to not being an investigator. He hid it. Also, the son of Mr. Klez, together with the son of a suspected lawmaker, had a joint company", declared lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos.
Eva Kaili was released from prison in April and is once again active in the European Parliament, acting as an independent lawmaker while awaiting trial.
