Donald Trump's much-discussed plan to create a "Peace Board" for Gaza, of which Albania is mentioned as a part, has begun to raise strong international questions - not only about the high financial cost, but also about the unclear political content of the initiative.
Political scientist and renowned Balkan expert David Philips, in an interview with "News24", has demanded urgent clarity from the Albanian side and the organizers of the plan themselves. He emphasizes that every country that becomes a permanent member of the board must pay 1 billion dollars, an amount that is unaffordable for a small country like Albania.
" This board will cost the countries $1 billion. We don't know how this money will be spent. President Trump will be the permanent president of this board and we don't know what kind of relationship he will have with the UN and the respective countries or his board. So far it's a pay-to-play scenario. We don't know how this money will be spent by some countries that are used to being part of the peace board, have been active. It should be clear what this board will do ," he said.
The expert also highlighted that the plan is still unclear as to what benefits these countries that will become part of it will receive and what will happen to the Palestinian people.
“ One question is what the benefit will be to the people of Palestine. But we want to know what the benefit will be to the whole enterprise, it is unclear. And how this enterprise will be governed, what the relationship will be with the donors. What the relationship will be with the countries of the region, which will be a Palestinian-led initiative and not a US-led initiative that organizes the international community. We do not know how this money will be spent. There should be a clear protocol. We want to know what the benefit will be to the people of Palestine, the relationship with the Board and the donor countries, the countries of the region, this will be an Israeli-led initiative and not a US-led International Committee ,” he continued.
Asked if Albania could become a permanent part of the board, he said: " The Peace Board could benefit, but does a small country like Albania have so much money? So where will Albania be included and what will it benefit from? This is not clear. This issue needs to be addressed in the best possible way. There is a lot of money for Albania to pay, it needs to be addressed to know what it will benefit from and this is not clear ."
As for the question of whether Albania could be one of the countries that could host foreigners, mainly Palestinians, he explained that our country has been mentioned as one of the candidates, but it is still unclear, as are the plan, donors and members.
" We don't know yet what has been proposed specifically. He (President Trump) has proposed deporting Palestinians to other countries. Albania has been mentioned among these countries, as has Sudan. But they have to be careful in the Gaza plan, we don't know to what extent. Donor countries have to be careful to invest in the Gaza peace plan, but that is not clear so far ," Philips said.
