Netanyahu opposes Peace Board, rejects Turkey and Qatar in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his opposition to any involvement of Turkish or Qatari troops in the Gaza Strip, deepening a standoff with the United States over the future governance of the territory. “There will be neither Turks nor Qataris in the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu told the Israeli parliament, suggesting that Tel Aviv does not approve of the composition of Washington’s proposed post-war platform.

Israel's opposition has focused mainly on the "Peace Council," a newly created structure under the personal leadership of US President Donald Trump, which has proposed a plan for the stabilization and reconstruction of Gaza after the war. According to the White House, the executive committee of this initiative will function in an advisory capacity and will include key figures in international diplomacy, including Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Qatar's top diplomat Ali al-Thawadi.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's office reacted on Saturday to the composition of this structure, underlining that the decision was made "without coordination with Israel and contrary to Israeli policy." Netanyahu said he had asked the Foreign Minister to initiate direct talks with his American counterpart to clarify Israel's position and influence the composition and role of this platform.

Israel has consistently opposed Turkey's involvement in the post-conflict administration of Gaza, especially after tensions escalated between the two countries since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory.

On the other hand, the United States has announced that the Gaza ceasefire agreement has entered its second phase. This phase includes the disarmament of Hamas, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from areas they control in the Palestinian territory, and the deployment of an international stabilization force.

It has not yet been made public which countries will participate in this mission, which aims to ensure stability and order in Gaza and help train new Palestinian security structures. This initiative, although supported on paper by some international actors, is facing strong opposition from Israel itself, which seems to seek to maintain full control over the political and security future of the Gaza territory.
