The ministers who were the most vocal in defense of Erdoğan now no longer have a place in the cabinet. The Minister of Finance will be an expert with international experience. Diplomacy will be directed by the current chief of the secret service. And at the head of the secret service will be Erdogan's main adviser so far. Sylejman Sojlu has not spared himself in defense of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. During the election campaign, Erdoğan often used harsh language against political opponents. But it was Sojlu who surpassed the president with aggressive rhetoric.
Interior Minister Sojlu called the May presidential and parliamentary elections "an attempt at a coup by the West". After an assassination attempt in Istanbul in November last year, Sojlu said: "We do not accept the condolences from the American ambassador, we reject them." He accused the US of supporting Kurdish fighters in northern Syria. Sojlu was among the most trusted people of President Erdoğan. But it seems his race to be the president's most vocal defender didn't pay off. Sylejman Sojlu is missing in the new cabinet of President Erdogan's government. He will only be an MP. So, one of the most powerful people so far by Erdoğan's side will politicize in the parliament with reduced powers. Instead of Sojlu, the new minister of internal affairs will be Ali Jerlikaja, until now governor of Istanbul and some small provinces. It remains to be seen whether with this appointment the repression against critical voices in Turkey will be stopped. It is likely that Sojlu left Erdoğan because he was too ambitious and could be seen as a rival for the future.
The first surprise is the appointment of Mehmet Simsek to the post of Minister of Finance. He had exercised this duty until 2018, when Erdoğan appointed his son-in-law Berat Albajrak as head of the treasury. Albajrak proved to be totally incompetent and his father-in-law was forced to remove him from his post. Simsek is of Kurdish origin, in addition to Turkish citizenship, he is also a British citizen and worked for the American bank Meryll Lynch. Erdoğan had tried to enlist Simsek in his electoral team, but he had refused. Now Erdoğan managed to convince him to return to the cabinet. With this appointment, Erdoğan sends a signal towards the stabilization of the economic situation. Until now, Erdoğan has been too involved in economic affairs, of which he does not know much, except for the religious-ideological conviction against usury. With his policy of low interest rates, he has deepened the economic crisis in Turkey. The appointment of Simsek is a warning of the change of the economic course.
