Billions of euros invested in nuclear energy to strengthen energy security and climate neutrality
China is rapidly advancing towards the position of the world's largest nuclear power producer, with a total of 112 reactors in operation, under construction or in the approval phase.
According to the latest official data, by the end of the year the number of active reactors is expected to reach 70. Currently, 62 reactors are operating in mainland China, while 39 are under construction and 11 others have been approved, with a total installed capacity of about 125 gigawatts.
The National Nuclear Safety Administration announced that the capacity of projects under construction accounts for more than half of the global total. The statement was made during the 2026 National Safety Education Day in Guangdong province.
The Chinese government has approved the construction of 41 new reactors between 2022 and 2025. At an average cost of about 20 billion yuan (about $2.8 billion) per unit, the total investment for the latest projects exceeds 800 billion yuan (about $110.4 billion).
The sector's intensive development is linked to China's strategic objectives of energy security and achieving carbon neutrality. In parallel, this expansion has significantly strengthened the domestic equipment industry. China has established a complete production and supply chain in the nuclear sector, with the capacity to build key components for more than 10 new reactors each year.
The majority of critical equipment and materials are already produced domestically, with a localization rate exceeding 90%.
Safety remains a top priority for China General Nuclear Power Group, the largest state-owned operator in the sector. According to President Yang Changli, the company's 28 reactors operated without any unplanned outages during 2025.
The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, China's first large commercial nuclear power plant, continues to operate safely after 32 years. To date, it has supplied Hong Kong with over 330 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, covering about a quarter of the city's needs.
