Political parties declare success, but results show a more complicated picture ahead of presidential elections

Local elections in France have produced a situation where almost every political force claims victory, while the results provide an early glimpse of the dynamics expected to influence next year's presidential elections, after the end of Emmanuel Macron's term.

The runoff rallies showed that the far-right, represented by the National Rally (Rassemblement National), has gained ground in small and medium-sized cities in the interior of the country. Meanwhile, the conservatives of Les Républicains retained most of the municipalities they controlled and managed to win several new ones.

Macron's Renaissance party secured control of Bordeaux and Annecy, recording its first significant victories at the local level. On the other hand, the center-left Socialist Party held Paris and several major metropolises, while Unyielding France (La France Insoumise) won several working-class suburban areas, in line with its electoral strategy.

wINNERS

Emmanuel Grégoire: The 48-year-old politician was elected mayor of Paris, extending the Socialists' 25-year dominance in the capital. His victory places him among the leading figures in French politics.

Édouard Philippe's presidential campaign: Macron's former prime minister secured re-election as mayor of Le Havre, a condition he had set for his presidential bid. According to polls, he remains one of the most likely candidates to advance to the presidential runoff.

Eric Ciotti: Elected mayor of Nice, he returns to the scene after leaving Les Républicains. His victory is also considered a partial success for the National Rally, although his economic and political positions do not fully align with Marine Le Pen's line.

National Rally: According to party leaders, it has achieved the greatest progress in its history, winning dozens of cities.

losers

National Rally: Despite the claimed victory, the two-round electoral system continued to limit the party's success in key cities such as Nîmes and Toulon. In Marseille, after a strong first-round showing, its candidate lost in a runoff.

Emmanuel Macron: The president supported candidates Rachida Dati and Jean-Michel Aulas in Lyon, but both lost, damaging his influence in this election.

Left-wing alliances: The cooperation between the Socialists and France Unyielding did not yield results in several cities such as Toulouse, Limoges, Clermont-Ferrand and Brest, where the joint candidates were defeated.

The Greens: The environmentalist party lost control of several important cities such as Strasbourg and Bordeaux, although it maintained chances in Lyon and Grenoble through local alliances.

François Bayrou: The centrist former prime minister lost in his hometown of Pau, months after being ousted by a no-confidence motion in parliament, putting the continuation of his political career in question. /Adapted from Politico /
