Fearing he'll lose his majority in Congress? Trump withdraws

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he was withdrawing his nomination of Republican Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Trump said he did not want to risk losing her congressional seat, calling it "politics 101."

"We don't want to take any chances, so I said to Elise, 'Do you have a problem?'" Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

" We don't want to take any chances. It's that simple. It's basic politics. It's politics 101. She's very popular. She's going to win. I really appreciate her," Trump added. The US President then emphasized that "she's doing me a great favor by accepting this, because she was ready to go to the United Nations, and she would have dealt with Putin and Zelensky and everyone else, and it would have been very effective. But we don't want to take any chances ," Trump said.

Trump's announcement has raised a smokescreen and questions about how concerned Republicans should be if their strong Republican district is at risk.

Trump won Stefanik's district by 30 percentage points last November. Stefanik has represented her district since 2015.

Republicans have a historically slim majority in the House of Representatives, where every vote counts as they aim to advance Trump's ambitious legislative agenda of tax and spending cuts along party lines.

Currently, there are 218 House Republicans and 213 House Democrats, with four seats vacant – meaning House Republicans can only afford to lose two Republicans on any party-line vote, assuming full turnout.

In his statement announcing the decision, Trump said the congresswoman would "join the House Leadership Team." Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) echoed the plan, saying he would "invite her to return to the leadership table immediately."

But it's unclear where Stefanik will fit in after relinquishing her position as chair of the House GOP conference, which she held for nearly four years, following her cabinet appointment.
