Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in parliamentary elections, ending a 16-year reign in power.
In a speech at the headquarters of his Fidesz party, Orbán called the result clear, though difficult to accept. “The results are clear, it is painful for us,” he told supporters.
He also confirmed that he congratulated the opposition Tisza party and its leader, Péter Magyar, on the victory. The latter announced the news in a post on social media.
Orbán was greeted with applause from supporters at the election headquarters, as they chanted his name before and during the speech.
The defeat marks a significant political moment in Hungary, closing a long chapter of Orbán's leadership of the country.
