The Gaza Strip has become a "graveyard for thousands of children", the United Nations said today, expressing fears that more could die of dehydration.
"Our worst fear that the number of children killed would turn into tens, then hundreds and finally thousands, became a reality in the space of fifteen days. The numbers are appalling: more than 3,450 children are reported to have been killed and it is shocking to note that this number is increasing every day ," said James Elder, a spokesperson for Unicef, in a press release.
Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children, he added, noting that more than a million children living in the Gaza Strip also suffer from a lack of drinking water.
" Gaza's water production capacity represents only 5% of its normal daily production. Deaths of children, especially infants, due to dehydration are a growing threat ," he said.
UNICEF calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, with the opening of all crossing points into Gaza to allow safe access for humanitarian aid.
" If there is no ceasefire, no water, no medicine, no release of the abducted children, we are heading for even greater horror for these innocent children," Elder said .
Israel struck the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian Islamist movement's unprecedented attack on October 7, in which Hamas killed 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped 240 others, according to Israeli officials. The Gaza Strip health ministry said the attacks had killed more than 8,500 people, mostly civilians.
