Israeli officials and Hamas leaders have confirmed that several Israelis have been taken hostage in Gaza. According to the Israeli military, the prisoners are being held by Hamas fighters in at least two locations in southern Israel.
Videos released by Hamas appear to show at least three Israelis captured alive. Meanwhile, photos from the Associated Press showed at least three civilians brought into Gaza, including two women.
But what do the parties claim regarding the hostage situation?
Israel has said an unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians have been taken into Gaza. Israeli army spokesman Hagari said Hamas fighters were also holding hostages in the towns of Beeri and Ofakim, located about 24 kilometers from Gaza.
Meanwhile, Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said the fighters had captured "dozens" of Israeli soldiers, including officers. He said the captives were being held in "safe places" and militant tunnels. Hamas deputy chief Arouri previously told Al Jazeera that the captives would be used for a prisoner exchange.
