Iran has accepted the US extension of the ceasefire but suggested it is not yet ready to take diplomatic action. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran is closely monitoring developments on the ground and in the political arena.
Regarding the possibility of new talks, in comments reported by Iranian state media, he added that diplomacy remains the right path, but that the necessary conditions are needed to use this tool.
"Diplomacy is a tool to ensure national interests and security, and whenever we conclude that the necessary and reasonable conditions exist to use this tool... we will take action," he said.
Baqaei also reiterated the threats often heard from Iranian figures against the US, that it was fully vigilant and ready for comprehensive and decisive defense of Iran's integrity against any threat and malicious act.
He also thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts to end the war.
In comments broadcast by Iranian state television, he also added that the obstacle to the negotiations has been the American side, which has shown a lack of seriousness.
"We entered the negotiations with good faith and seriousness, but the negotiating party, the US, has shown disregard and lack of trust ," Baqaei added.
A second round of talks, possibly in the Pakistani capital later this week, has not yet been confirmed. Yesterday, Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, leaving unclear the next steps for resuming talks.
Regarding this, Baqaei added that a decision has not yet been made on the new round of peace negotiations planned for this week.
"Iran has not yet decided whether to participate in the new round of peace negotiations with the United States, scheduled for later this week ," Baqaei concluded.
