Iran is not seeking escalation of regional tensions, but says Israel must be punished in order to prevent further instability.
After the assassination of the head of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Iran said that it does not seek the escalation of tensions, but seeks the punishment of Israel.
"Iran wants stability in the region, but this can only be achieved by punishing the aggressor and creating a deterrent against the adventurism of the Zionist Israeli regime ," said spokesman Nasser Kanaani, adding that a response from Tehran is inevitable.
Kanaani called on Washington to stop supporting Israel, adding that the international community has failed to protect stability in the region and must punish the aggressor.
Even the top commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, again called for Israel to be punished.
Tehran and Iran-linked groups Hamas and Hezbollah have accused Israel of killing Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. While Israeli officials have not taken responsibility for the murder.
