New talks to reach a ceasefire will take place in Egypt, with the US expected to send a delegation.
The White House announced that a new round of talks aimed at arranging a ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for hostages held by Hamas is being planned in Egypt this weekend.
The US will send a delegation, led by CIA Director Bill Burns, to the talks in Cairo.
White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby said President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call Thursday to empower his negotiators so a deal could be reached as soon as possible.
Negotiators have been trying to secure a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of sick, elderly and wounded hostages held by Hamas. However, progress on a deal has stalled for weeks.
"Let 's get an agreement so that we can get a ceasefire for a couple of weeks in effect so that it's easier to meet those commitments to increase humanitarian aid ," Kirby told reporters in Washington this afternoon.
