Fears of an escalation of war in the Persian Gulf are changing the atmosphere in Dubai, one of the region's most important financial and tourist hubs. After many tourists left in recent days, several international companies have begun temporarily closing offices and moving staff out of the United Arab Emirates.
According to media reports, major financial and consulting companies such as Deloitte, PwC and Citibank, as well as other European and American groups, have suspended local activity and have begun repatriating employees on the few flights that continue to operate.
At the same time, several international airlines, including KLM, Lufthansa and Royal Air Maroc, have reduced or suspended flights to the region.
Tensions have been rising after several drone attacks attributed to Iran. According to local reports, one of the attacks hit the airport, while others targeted a military base, a hotel, the financial district and the main highway Sheikh Zayed Road.
Local authorities described the incidents as limited and with minor material damage. According to them, municipal services intervened immediately to clean up the affected areas.
However, the perception in the city seems different. Shopping malls and streets are less frequented, while many hotels, restaurants and beaches report low visitor numbers.
At the same time, authorities in the Emirates have warned of strict measures against the publication of videos of the attacks on social media. According to reports, several foreign residents have been investigated and in one case arrested for publishing footage of the attacks, on charges of violating laws on cybersecurity and public order.
